What does "soy un perdedor" mean?

Answer: Soy un perdedor means I'm a loser.

One of the strange things about having any sort of web site is perusing the referral logs and seeing what brings people to one's site. Many bloggers become accidental Google authorities for the strangest things, and they often post the unlikely search terms that bring people to their sites.

I get quite a few searches coming to me from people searching for the meaning of "soy un perdedor. " They wind up at this site because that was a title of a post containing a collection of links to games you can't lose earlier this year.

Unfortunately, that post provides no translation, so I'm afraid these searchers all leave here empty-handed. I can't have that, so the result is this post. The Spanish words occur numerous times in Beck's first hit, Loser. I imagine that's why people are searching.

I wouldn't be surprised to find people searching for "soy un pair da door" or "soy oon pairdador" or "soy one paredador" or "soy un pare the door" or "soy oon pairda door." I guess we'll see.

Wow its kinda weird to think so many people are looking for the translation of Soy un perdedor just because they hear it in a song. Of course if you listin to the song or sing it one would want to know what it ment.

all this controversy over Soy un Perdedor. the title says it all Loser / Perdedor. lets not forget the heavy accent with words that starts with the letter S " Es" sound. Esteven, Estake,( steven, stake ) teasing at the expense of my border brothers
next time look for a mexican lol
" soy un perderdor, porque no me matas..."

not translating "so" because it changes depending the subject it can be used as a adjetive or conjutive and it opens a whole can of worms. Infinitive class is over.

  48. Yet another on the pile of googlers.

In fact I too thought it was something about opening doors + had to google "beck loser lyrics" to find it was spanish.

"Soy un" was pretty obvious as "I am" even without knowing any spanish other than "no habla espanol" but "perdador" i was guessing as "predator", but that is probably just a manifestation of some psychosocial defect i have.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anonymous1:14 PM

To answer the question about "Sprechen Sie Deutsch, hier, Baby", it is German, and the direct translation is, "Speak You (formal usage) German, here" baby is English.
So basically it is like he is saying, "Do you speak German here, baby?"

  53. "Soy un perdedor" and "I'm a loser" generally speaking, mean the same thing. There's a difference of permanency, though. "Soy un perdedor" means that for the time being, temporarely, you've lost; you're down, and you accept it, but it is not WHAT YOU ARE. You're just part of the team that just lost a game a bet, a job, or something temporary. "I'm a loser, baby, so why don't you kill me" doesn't seem to offer a chance for redemption. Beck is good!

I'm Swedish and I was maybe 10 years old when this song was released so I just assumed Beck was from Sweden too and sang in both Swedish and English:
"Såååå, gå och klipp ditt hååår! I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me?" , the Swedish part meaning "so go and cut your hair". When I had listened to it a couple of times I was sure he sang "sååå-åå kläm din tå! I'm a loser baby.." etc, whith the Swedish words in this case meaning "sooo-oo pinch your toe" (but rather like jamming your toe in a door, crushing it almost). I knew what "I'm a loser.." and the rest meant.

Found out what the real lyrics were and what they meant years ago, but ended up here as I googled the correct spelling of them. /ReBECKa

You know if you were to sing it in English only you'd say "im a loser I'm a loser baby do why don't you kill me?" which is redundant and similar to saying "the Sahara desert" because Sahara actually means desert and so you're really saying "desert desert" which is again redundant. I suppose I only made sense to do it in a bother language. It's also cooler that way.

It finally hit me one today...what in the hell is he saying? BTW, whiskeyclone.net is an excellenct archive of history behinds a lot of Beck's songs. As the song that launched Beck's career, it's kind of interesting how it came into being. It was just a joke, and didn't see the light of day for a couple of years and was forgotten about:

" in his living room while they ate pizza and Doritos. Beck remembers how they hooked up: "Tom [Rothrock, of Bong Load Records] had called up and said, ?Hey, I know this guy who does hip-hop beats and stuff.? I said, ?Oh yeah, well sometimes I rap between songs and get people from the audience to do the beat-box thing into the mike.? So we went to this guy?s house and I played him a few of my folk songs. He seemed pretty all-around unimpressed." Carl himself also remembered, "I had some ideas of some grooves, and I played them for Beck. At that time, I had taken several sitar lessons, so I laid some sitar into a track to see what he thought of it, and he started scribbling down some ideas that he had onto a piece of notebook paper, and after a couple of hours, we roughed out an idea for 'Loser,' the first song that we ever did together. We'd just met a few hours earlier."

Stephenson took one of Beck's slide guitar riffs, looped it and added all the musical layers, including the drum beats, sitar, and a great funky bassline. The song was semi-forgotten, until Bong Load Records finally released the song as a single in 1993. Thus began Beck's career.

"So then what does Beck think of the song? "It was a fun song to make, and when they take it out of context like that, it's kind of a drag. It's not some anguished, transcendental 'cry of a generation.' It's just like sitting in someone's living room eating pizza and Doritos.""
